Did the 2012 Golden Globe winners go according to plan? Or were there any big surprises? Are the Oscar favorites more or less cemented right now?

The Help, The Artist, The Descendants and Hugo proved they are early Oscar leaders, with each film taking home some hardware Sunday evening.

The Artist’s wins for Best Score and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin kept the critical favorite squarely in the driver’s seat as an early Oscar favorite.

After winning Best Actor for The Descendants, George Clooney is the man to beat for the honor at the Oscars. That film was also the best drama.

Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical went to The Artist, while Meryl Streep won Best Actress (shocker) as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

The Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement went to Morgan Freeman (above), who received the honor from Sidney Poitier and Helen Mirren.

Kicking off the night was a Ricky Gervais monologue that went after stars such as Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian this year. So … there’s that.

If you haven’t been too busy reading juvenile movie blogs all week, you might have heard that Navy Capt. Owen Honors was recently fired as commander of the carrier USS Enterprise in the fallout from the release of some “raunchy”, “anti-gay” videos he made to entertain his “seamen” (sorry, one seamen joke, I couldn’t resist). Him being a budding filmmaker and all, I thought this story fell under our purview, so I’ve embedded a couple of the videos in question. They’re pretty boring, sort of what you might expect if Michael Scott from The Office was a ship commander. I’ve spent waaay more time than I would’ve liked watching these, only to see what was so offensive, and the worst thing I saw was a guy saying a “f*g clogged up the sh*tter!” My stars, men aboard ship making jokes about gay sex and masturbation??? Tread not on my monocle, for in my surprise it has fallen.

One of the videos also spliced in a clip of Glenn Close, prompting her to release an OFFICIAL STATEMENT to say that she’s “distraught.”

A clip of Close from her 2006 tour of the warship features at the end of the video in question, which contains coarse language, anti-gay slurs, and jokes with homophobic overtones (in one sketch, Honors is seen in a bathing cap, trying to find an unoccupied shower, and discovering many same-sex shipmates lathering each other up). [*a sun bonnet is heard falling to the floor, the back of a white-gloved hand hits a forehead, writer faints* -Ed]

In a statement, Close said: “I am distraught that my image has been used to perpetuate something that I abhor. The cynical, unauthorized use of my image in this video is deeply offensive and insulting, and was the result of a seemingly innocent request made during a visit to an aircraft carrier over four years ago.” [EW]

For her to be this upset, I figured they must’ve dubbed over her voice with Mel Gibson’s or showed her pissing on a Holocaust memorial or something, but all a saw was a two-second clip of her sitting in the captain’s chair with a stuffed parrot in her lap. (it’s about four-fifths of the way through this video, but I promise, it’s nothing). Are these people serious?  Does no one remember the phrase “curse like a sailor?”  I always took that to mean we accepted a certain level of coarse language from guys cooped up in a ship full of other salty dudes for months at a time, but apparently inside jokes aboard ship are now held to the same standards of political correctness as Billy Bush’s Zac Efron interview.  I wonder if Glenn Close or her A-hole publicist actually watched the videos before they fired off an angry email, or if they just sort of skimmed it and took the content for granted, like they did with that Stepford Wives script.

This weekend movie patrons get to choose between a Leonardo DiCaprio-starring cerebral funhouse and a movie loosely inspired by the Fantasia short that plunked Mickey Mouse in the middle of a nightmare carousel of magical broomsticks. The former is Inception [read our review here], the highly anticipated and fervently guarded mind-thriller directed by Christopher Nolan and centered around a team of dream-thieves. Facing off against it is The Sorcerer's Apprentice, starring Jay Baruchel as a novice magician working under the wacky tutelage of master sorcerer Nicholas Cage. Alfred Molina plays sinister adversary Maxim Horvath.

At 37, Gwyneth Paltrow graces the August cover of Vogue’s Age Issue – and the star told the mag she’s happy to be in her thirties.

Hahaha, I love Hollywood sometimes.  Earlier when I announced the (incorrect) rumor that Josh Hutcherson had been cast as Spider-Man, I was all like, “Hey, well at least it’s not the fruity weirdo in the scarf, huh?” Smash cut to five minutes ago, when Sony made an official announcement about the new Spider-Man kid, and surprise, it’s Andrew Garfield, the scarf guy.  Or as I like to call him, “Scarfield.”  Some people say other pictures of him exist besides the scarf one, but if that’s true, I DON’T WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IT.

After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012.  The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt.

I’ve heard Scarfield hates lasagna but loves gossipy cigarette breaks.  Okay, okay, I’ll stop with the scarf jokes. But seriously, million dollar question: who the hell is this kid?

Garfield [who's 26 and British] most recently worked with director David Fincher on the upcoming film The Social Network. He previously starred for Spike Jonze on his robot love story I’m Here [which you can watch online here].  He plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, due for release later this year.  Other notable credits include Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, Robert Redford’s Lions For Lambs, Revolution Films’ “Red Riding Trilogy – 1974” directed by Julian Jarrold, where he lead a stellar cast including Rebecca Hall and David Morrissey, and his unforgettable portrayal of a young ex-con in John Crowley’s “Boy A,” for which he earned the best actor BAFTA in 2008. The BAFTAs are basically the British Oscars, so yeah, this kid’s probably got some pretty decent dramatic chops.  And he’s probably just as masculine as Tobey Maguire [...].  Still, I can’t get over that picture.  It’s the first image result on Google, and he looks like he’d get a nosebleed from watching sports on TV.  If I were Scarfield, I’d find the photographer who took this and strangle him with my scarf. Or at least throw a really bitchy hissy fit.
