Kate Winslet wins best actress oscar

February 23, 2009 by Clark

British icon Kate Winslet has won the best actress award at this year’s Oscars award ceremony for her role in ‘The Reader’.

This is the sixth time she has been nominated for the award, but the first time she had won one of the little golden fellows.

Kate told the huge audience that she’d originally prepared an Oscars speech when she was a girl of 8 years old. How sweet is that?

“I’d be lying if I hadn’t made a version of this speech. I think I was probably eight years old and staring into a mirror,” she said at the ceremony.

With husband Sam Mendes watching, she went on to thank the people who had been a great influence and important to her life, including directors Anthony Minghella and Sidney Pollak, who both passed away last year.

She referred to the other nominees as “goddesses” and singled out Meryl Streep: “I think we all can’t believe we are in the same category as Meryl Streep at all,” Kate said, much to the appreciation of the crowd.

So three cheers for Kate Winslet- You’ve come a long way from clinging to bits of broken ship.
