Keira Knightley’s boyfriend defends abuse ad

Rupert Friend, Keira Knightley’s fella, has struck out at the decision of a TV watchdog to ban Keira’s harrowing anti-domestic abuse advert from TV screens. The advert, in which Keira is brutally beaten by a fictional lover after an accusation of infidelity, has been banned for being too graphic.

Made for Woman’s Aid, the lingering shot of Knightley being repeatedly kicked in the stomach while she lies screaming that ends the advert is very harrowing indeed.

Rupert, her real life boyfriend is angry that the ad won’t be seen on TV. In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, he states: “I think that banning an advert because it is shocking is quite the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. What is shocking is that women are getting hit. The point is to shock people.”

Having viewed the advert in question, we can say that while yes, it is upsetting and very hard to watch, it is a necessary shock that brings home the fact that this stuff happens, and it can happen to anyone. We side with Rupert. This common problem is all to easily swept under the carpet and as such the advert needs to be seen by a wide audience.

It is available on various video sites, so go and judge for yourself. Domestic violence must be stopped, but before that can happen, it must be acknowledged. Censoring an advert designed to help people is not the answer.
