Matt Damon turned down Star Trek role

Star Trek director and TV mogul JJ Abrams has confirmed that yes, Matt Damon was originally approached to play Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek movie. The Hollywood heartthrob, known to millions for his role in the Bourne movies as well as films such as the gloriously anarchic Dogma, turned the role down.

JJ Abrams told Life magazine:  “I actually approached Matt and we had some discussions, but everything happens for a reason. On the one hand, it would have been great to work with Matt – but at the end of the day, it was such a better move to cast the movie with unknowns.”

The new Star Trek film, just called Star Trek, features the original characters from the 60s TV series played by an all new cast- plus one very familiar face. Chris Pine eventually took the role of the young James Kirk, a role previously played by the legendary William Shatner, who is now also known to millions from his role on Boston legal.

We think it works better with Pine as Kirk. A cast of actors that aren’t massively well known aside from Simon Pegg (who plays Scotty) and Karl Urban (Dr McCoy) helps the film keep its audience’s minds on the story more than the celebrities. Then again, it does help that the new cast is gorgeous.
