Michael Jackson’s death: The Aftermath

July 6, 2009 by Clark

The days following the death of Michael Jackson have been just as turbulent and troubled as the late singer’s life was. The media have been picking apart every aspect of his legacy, his family and the children in his life like starving vultures. Controversy surrounding the fate of his kids, his estate, his financial situation and the circumstances of his death have been taking up more column inches than pretty much everything else of late, and it is really getting in the way of the fact that a family has lost a brother and son.

We as consumers may see Michael Jackson as our property due to buying a few albums, but we would be very wrong. No star is our property. No person should be made to feel so isolated from the world.

Yes, it is great to be enthusiastic to a particular artist and their work, but to pick apart every piece of their life in minute detail is tasteless and disrespectful. Yes, this may seem hypocritical coming from a writer for a celebrity news and gossip site, but it the honest truth of the matter.

Ticket touts have made a fortune from people who wanted to see their idol perform one last time, and while many people have been able to get refunds for their tickets, those who bought them through other means have been left out of pocket as well as grieving for their hero. Officially licensed Michael Jackson memorabilia is selling like wildfire, but so is unofficial merchandise which is of a lower quality.

It absolutely sickens me that people were selling memorial t-shirts outside the Neverland ranch little more than an hour after Michael’s death. It sickens me that the media is concentrating so much on his mental state. It sickens me that there are so many jokes about his death doing the rounds. We must remember Michael for his work, not the problems that plagued him. Remember him as a great talent, a musical genius, and a relentless entertainer. That is a very proud legacy. Love his music and let his family and close friends grieve in private for a troubled family member.
