51XT9SJVA0L. SL160  Oscars 2010: Kathryn Bigelows Big WinKathryn Bigelow has made history at this year’s Oscars ceremony by becoming the first woman to ever win the ‘Best Director’ award. Her movie, The Hurt Locker, also won best Picture at the globally admired ceremony, whereas James Cameron’s groundbreaking Avatar movie scraped up just three lower echelon Oscars.

Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, the Iraq war movie wound up getting six Oscars, and continues to be praised by moviegoers around the world.

Other big winners at the ceremony included Jeff Bridges as Best Actor for his role in Crazy Heart, Sandra 51KCx3PVKEL. It’s been something of a controversial Oscars this year, but then again, isn’t it always? There have been some magnificent pictures of the stars in their fineries published, but the main thing is that the ceremony is still about the movies and not the celebrities. That’s why this ceremony is still essential- artists deserve to be honoured for their work rather than their gender or their lifestyle.
