Bag Lady Style: Fashion to carry

February 24, 2009 by Clark

So when choosing the ideal bag to accessorise with, what do you look for? This season, the focus is on the big, the chunky and the noticeable. Gone are the days when it was a squeeze to fit your lippy and your mobile in your delicate Barbie-style clutch. The new boldly patterned bags are big enough to fit your boyfriend in (though why you’d want to…). They’ll take you from breakfast to two a.m. kebab without a hitch.

So, now that we can, what should go in this season’s oversized statement bag?

Water is the obvious choice. A 500 ml bottle of Evian is great for keeping skin youthful and brains hydrated. And you can refill it from the tap at work. But hydration isn’t everything. To avoid calorific bingeing, pop in a couple of healthy snacks to keep your blood sugar levels steady throughout the day.

Bananas are ideal, as are cereal bars, but makes sure they’re not too high in sugar. We love Eat Natural Apricot and Almond bars, which are chunky and filling with a delicious yoghurt glaze – the perfect chocolate substitute.

But don’t fill up your bag like it was a picnic hamper. A notebook and pen are essential for a girl on the go. Supermarkets like Tesco have a range of brightly patterned options which allow you to key into this season’s vivid trends for mere pennies.

Add in a magazine or book for entertainment while commuting – and don’t limit yourself to bag-size mags. Now we’ve gone oversized, pop in Cosmo or Elle. Or War and Peace if you like, now there’s room for it. A whole makeup bag, body spray and a spare pair of tights, because you never know. Thank God that doll-size bags have gone out. Now, at last, our statement bags are life-size.
