BRIGHT THE GOOD BRIGHT: Colours for here and now

February 24, 2009 by Clark

Throw out your winter greys and browns. Drab and dreary is out, out, out. After what is thought to have been the harshest winter in two decades, the catwalk is celebrating springtime with a riot of bright colours, absurdist fantasies and fabulous twists on vintage styles. Let’s face it, doesn’t a ‘forties tea gown look better in lurid pink and sick green? But of course.

In this coming season, fashion is set to be fun, fun, fun. As we tighten our purses and cut up our credit cards, let’s think of some ways to cash in on the trend for vivid colours and fantastical restylings without giving in to the urge to splurge.

Vintage shops are all too often more like junk shop clothes at boutique-style prices. Economy they are not, so up your karma count as well as your fashion needs by looking in charity shops for retro pieces at a fraction of the cost. Take a trip up to the well-to-do areas of town and you’ll find great quality clothes, and maybe even a vintage designer piece!

You could also consider customising clothes that you find. Look for natural fabrics that can be easily and cheaply restyled by dyeing – but remember to follow directions carefully when dyeing and use kitchen salt as a fixative, or you could find that your newly lime green slashed ‘seventies blouson runs in the next downpour.

Dylon fabric dyes are available from all good haberdashery departments for under a fiver. Accessorise with as many necklaces as Mr T. – but faux pearls and bright beads instead of gold – and Christian Louboutin will be begging to offer you free shoes. The self-made look is so right on the boho trend it isn’t true, and between charity shops and your own ingenuity, there’s no need to look outdated this spring.
