Fawlty Towers reopens its doors… briefly

May 6, 2009 by Clark

The comedy classic Fawlty Towers is back- sort of. The four main players in the cast of that perfect sitcom, namely John Cleese, Prunella Scales, Andrew Sachs and the still delightful Connie Booth got together recently to shoot a new special commemorating the show’s finest moments. But don’t expect any new episodes- John Cleese says ‘We’re too old and tired now’, and that they’d be mad to try and revive it.

Quite right too. No matter how good it might be, a revival would never match up to the original in the eyes of the viewing public, and probably the cast themselves. Those 12 episodes of flawless comedy stand as a testament to the great British sitcom, and quite frankly, Fawlty Towers IS the greatest British sitcom ever made.

The new documentary covers the inception and success of the program with in-depth recollections of the famous and beloved cast. John Cleese has made it known that he’s none too taken with current comedy, saying that writers don’t seem to be doing work that matches up to the creators of the classic era of the 70s sitcoms, and we have to agree. we’re very taken with his conclusion: “But I do proudly say that in the 60s, 70s and 80s we did have the least bad television in the world, and that’s quite a claim.”

Here’s to Fawlty Towers- the greatest 12 episodes of British comedy, and probably British television, that have ever been made.
